Our Mission
WeGenerative is motivated by the possibilities of trash, the wasted potential behind waste. Environmental impact is generally understand to be a negative term, implicating every negative trace left behind. Green house gas emissions, pollution, destruction of natural resources: these are all negative consequences of our daily decisions. But if to live is to leave trace, how do we consciously reexamine the impacts of our lives, and make decisions that can have positive results?
WeGenerative aims to reimagine, humanize, empathize with, and revolutionize waste systems so that our environmental impacts can be positive for ourselves, for our communities, for social justice, and for our planet.
What that looks like is first and foremost to value the valuable work of waste workers. When we start by humanizing a largely stigmatized, “dirty” job, recontextualizing this necessary labor with the reverence deserved of someone shepherding resources, preventing pollution, and mitigating negative impact, everything changes.
Next, now that we’ve reimagined waste as resources, and waste workers as the shepherds of those resources, we create systems based around those principles. We reallocate resources for positive impact. We focus on food donation. We recycle. We compost. We pick up litter. We educate. We generate positive impacts out of would-be waste and wasted opportunities. That’s what makes us, WeGenerative.
Our humanistic approach demands respect not only for ourselves, but for the communities most impacted by the wastefulness of the wealthy. We prioritize making waste into community benefit, through food rescue, donation, recycling right, and pollution prevention.
